Dropshipping - what is it?

Dropshipping means that others can sell your products without holding any stock and you send the product to the customer.
Traditional dropshipping was done where the wholesaler would send out the product in an unmarked box so as not to confuse the customer with too many brands i.e., the wholesaler and the retailer. As dropshipping has gained in popularity this is not always the case.

It basically works like this:
You have a product to sell
I want to sell your product but dont want to hold the stock
You give me a wholesale rate but I don't have to prepurchase stock from you
I advertise the products on my website/blog etc
I take the orders and the money from the customer and for intents & purposes I am the only contact for the customer
I then place the order with you and transfer funds to your account at the wholesale rate
You send the parcel to the customer
Transaction is now complete

When it comes to Advertising your business, you can spend an absolute fortune and get very little return or you can think outside the box and refine your advertising so that you are only targetting the people that will specifically be interested in your products & services.

One of the easiest ways to advertise and by far the cheapest, is also one that is overlooked CONSTANTLY! Everyday we send out dozens of emails however most people forget to include a signature block at the bottom of their emails. As you know, emails get passed around and often end up far from where they started. Joke emails in particular get passed from friend to friend all around the country and often internationally - if you make sure to add your signature block before sending an email on then your name is going to be seen by dozens of people each time.

How do I choose a business name?

Need to choose a business name or domain name for an online business?
Sometimes when you are looking for a business name or domain name, it can feel like you have gone around the world and back again before you get to anything you even remotely like.
When choosing a name it is important, especially in the case of a domain name, that it be easy for the customer to remember and reflect what your business is. For eg if you are going to sell pet products there is no point calling your business or domain "Funky Cool Stuff" - this doesn't tell anyone what you do. Nor is there any point calling it "Funky Cool Stuff for Dogs and Cats and other animals" , nobody is ever going to remember a name like this.

The competition in every industry is fierce so you need to think outside the square and in the mind of a consumer when choosing your business name.
If you have tried everything and still can't come up with anything then sometimes it is worth outsourcing this task. We offer a Business Name Package where you give us a brief of what your business is about and anything that is important to you to have included. We then brainstorm and create a list of 10 possible names for you to choose from. Each name will have been checked against the domain registers to make sure the .com.au domain is available at the time of providing you with the report.
The turnaround time on this service is no longer than 48 hours from the time we receive your information. If there is nothing suitable amongst the 10 names, we will then provide you with another 10 names to choose from. With each name suggestion we include our reasoning for selecting the name and the perspective of someone looking in at your business. The cost for this service is $47.
It is important to remember that we will only provide you with the 10 best names to start with so that you are not completely overrun by choices. The best way to choose from there is to go with your gut instinct. Say the name over and over, what does it look like written down, can you remember it easily enough. If the answer to these is yes, then your customers will also have no problems remembering who you are.
You can book and pay for this service via our shop.

Business Names, what, why & how

Do you need to register a business name?
Not necessarily. In every state you have the option of trading under your own name or initials plus surname for eg, we trade as M & K Holmes. If you trade as your own name you do not need to register a business name. You cannot however add something to your name i.e. M & K Holmes Business Consultants - this would require a business name registration.
Our business is therefore referred to on all government documents etc as M & K Holmes trading as ourselves. Our businesses are all run under that banner however we have a seperate domain name & website for each one.

If you are going to set up a Bricks & Mortar business for eg a shop in a shopping centre, then you will need to allow for a business name registration together with local council registrations.
If you are planning on running an online business then you do not need to do this. You can simply do as we do and trade under your own name but have your website called something else.
A business name does not give you any protection whatsoever against someone else using that name. The only way to protect your business name is to take out a Trademark over the name. This then protects your name and your domain name. Not doing this is similar to not buying stock - it is a necessity - more on this in the Trademarks section.
